Michael Ryans makes history in Hale County

Updated: May 12, 2018

On May 3, 2018, the Hale County Board of Education publicly announced the new superintendent. The search for Superintendent begin when Osie Pickens, who made triple history in Hale County, as the first african american, first woman and first african american female ever to hold the seat of superintendent in the county, announced her retirement. Ms. Pickens turned in her letter to the board, and will hold the seat until M. Ryans takes office on July 1.

Mr. Ryans is no stranger to the Hale County school system, having entered into teaching after graduating from the University of Alabama. Ryans, has served in many capacities including principal at Sunshine High School which was located in Newbern, Alabama, before taking his current role in the central office. There were numerous support for Mr. Ryans on social Media, parents praising the news with numerous congratulatory comments and post about the new appointment.

In a quote to the observer, he states, " I am extremely grateful to have been selected as the next Superintendent of the Hale County School District, effective July 1, 2018. I believe that my comprehensive background and valuable experiences in this school system will be an asset to the district and the communities it serves.  Most importantly, by being a lifelong resident of Hale County, a product of this great school system, as well as a longtime employee, I have proven that I am dedicated to Hale County and its education system. My goal is to continue to serve and to be a role model who can inspire students to believe that their dreams can become a reality. I look forward to working with the citizens of Hale County to continue to move our school system forward."

As the first African American male superintendent, his role will include but is not limited to, making day-to-day decisions about educational programs, spending, staff, and facilities. The super also hires, supervises, and manages the central staff and principals.

In order for the school system to remain on top, everyone, ESPECIALLY parents, need to be involved and supportive in order to continue moving the system forward.
